The Splendid Hit and Win Game

Age recommendations
There is no upper age limit defined for Archery. You would even see people continue it and perform very well into their 80s. However, several studies reveal that children less than 7 are not fully able to comprehend the safety instructions and requirements. Where as, 10 years of age can be considered as a sensible lower limit; when the child is physically strong enough to handle the bow and arrow.
Health disclosure
While being a popular social sport, Archery has a number of health benefits involved and the most significant feature is that it can be equally enjoyed by able bodied and disabled people. Even the most severely disabled and even the blind can get involved in Archery using special tactile equipment. A few other elated benefits are listed below;
i. Benefits
  • Strengthening of muscles and shoulders
  • Boosts hand and eye coordination
  • Strengthens the hands and fingers
  • Enhancing the ability to focus the target
  • Develops efficient arms and upper body
ii. Associated Syndromes & Injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome -this usually occurs when the players continue to grasp something, stressing their wrists
  • Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT) -when the muscles of the hands and legs weaken occasionally, while the others retain their strength
  • Wallenberg's syndrome - a condition related to neurology; caused by a stroke in the vertebral. It can be caused due to rapid movements of the neck
Significance
The idea of pulling an arrow and achieving your target takes you back to the mythical age. It gives you a sense of pride and arrogance; just like carrying an attitude of your own. Archery, with the passage of time has undergone several changes and the equipment used, has been assigned various codes for making it easier to select; according to age and size. There are a number of clubs and associations linked with Archery nowadays. They not only conduct classes for the passionate to learn but also provide relevant assistance for buying proper equipment. The experts in the field recommend the learners to use equipment provided by the clubs; for a small fee, until they are well experienced.
Archery has been assigned various codes depending upon the type but the most commonly practiced form is the target and field.
  • The Target archery is usually carried out in a flat field and requires archers to shoot a specific number of arrows at targets; priory established values. This is the type you would also have seen in the Olympics where the players try to shoot at a bull's eye.

  • Field archery involves shooting at different targets of varying distances. This type is usually arranged in woods making the archers follow a prescribed course; negotiate various terrains including hills, bushes and trees, slopes, etc. the archers are normally allowed to shoot a maximum of 3 arrows at each target.
Along with requiring a lot of skill and practice, Archery needs a player to be patient and focused at the same time. However, you can never expect to shoot right in the centre at a very initial level. Hours of training and preparation is needed to achieve perfection, it is best if you join a club and take regular classes. Again, as mentioned earlier, you must be very particular about the equipment that you get. It's important to buy a bow that's properly sized and matches your physique. In simple words, choose the one that is easier to pull and requires less effort. The arrows too, should be long enough to pull and set the bow at rest.
Archery helps you achieve mental toughness aside from physically grooming yourself. It has proven to be a very good exercise and wonderful time pass. Practice can make you perfect over time and also lead to vast improvement. However, being patient is the key to success! Joining a club for the game helps you expand your social circle and meet-up with people with similar hobbies.

Would you like to get more perfection in your life? There are many folks who are perfectionists already, and those who hope to attain perfection in their future. It is quite obvious by the sports people play and the careers that they choose who is in search of perfection or who is already one with it. Indeed, I'd like to talk about this for a few moments if I might.
As a former athlete, I was in a sport where perfection of efficiency was omnipotent. I was a long-distance runner, and every stride mattered, every meal mattered, and every training session was paramount. The running shoes I wore, and the miles I ran required precision. Of course, running is not the only sport which requires perfection. Olympic swimmers often talk about this, as well as gymnasts, and those that do the high diving routines or figure skating for instance.
Still, perhaps the most difficult sport whether you are a perfectionist or attempting to be would be that of archery. It is a mental game as much as a physical contest. You have to be 100% in it to win it. If you are not one with perfection, then another archer who is will be victorious, and you don't stand a chance. Indeed, archery is one of the oldest sports that we have still around today. And it is perhaps for that reason that perfectionists have throughout the ages come to participate in this most intensive endeavor.
Some believe that today's equipment is so much better that you don't need perfection to be good. I beg to differ with that because as the equipment gets better, those who are completely talented and skilled in this activity get even better themselves. There are far fewer misses at short range, and at long range it is amazing how accurate they can be. The cross bows of today are engineering marvels and the new materials allow for some incredible force and accuracy.
Of course, if you are not in search of perfection, you are not going to make it on the competitive circuit in archery. The top archers are one with perfection from their breathing to the delicate release of their fingertips. Their hands are steady, tried and true. If you are a man in search of perfection, might I suggest the sport of archery to hone your skills, and to understand what it means to be perfect, absolutely perfect. That is what archery is all about, at least to me. Please consider all this and think on it.

We have just had our Paralympics in the UK, which is an international sport event, which athletes with physical and other disabilities participated in, this may include mobility disabilities, amputates, blindness and cerebral palsy.
There is a practice called boosting, which an athlete with spinal damage is capable of doing. Statistics indicates that a 30% of wheelchair athletes are doing boosting before the games. They do self harmto help increase blood pressure and performance enhancement without feeling any pain. The way this is done would be having the lower part of the body exposed to painful stimuli like, a full bladder, breaking a toe or sitting on sharp objects. Some would even go to the extreme of pinning their testicles.
Boosting for a Paralympians is the same as banned drugs or steroid to an able-bodied athlete.
The officials help the self harming athletes by telling them how dangerous this boosting can be for their health. Players would be required to have their blood pressures taken before the game and if it's off the roof, then the punishment would be the disqualification of that player from the game. But if they have a doctor's certificate explaining why their blood pressure is high, then they are still permitted to compete.
But interestingly, ever since the Beijing Paralympic games, no athletes have been tested positive for boosting.
The risk of these boosting practices is a stroke or a heart attack due to elevated blood pressure, but since some other athletes can't feel anything, they thought that the risk is worth taking. This is an extremely dangerous and risky stunt to do but for others this is the cost of victory. They'd do a little self harm in exchange for a moment of triumph that they'll remember forever.
Currently the number of Paralympians who had been through a programme that teaches the dangers of boosting is increasing. The programme covered all aspects of the athlete's preparation. The athlete is fully aware that the Paralympics does not encourage boosting in any way, form or shape that can cause potential danger to the person.
With the number of interest and investment for the Paralympics that kept on increasing from other nations, it is believed the athletes would have the spot light that can help boost their performance without any self harm from boosting. These indeed are positive signs not only for the Paralympic games but for the Paralympic athletes as well.

Remember Sebastian Coe? You can't really forget him can you, as he's been in the public eye since the seventies. From winning Olympic gold medals, being an MP to organising the London 2012 Olympics. We all know of his major achievements, but here are a few lesser known things that you may not know.
1. Coe was appointed the first chairman FIFA's ethics commission.
He was appointed in 2006 and his role was to set dates and locations for tournaments, including deciding on the formats. He also had the power to hire and fire delegates.
2. Seb is an ambassador for Nike worldwide.
He also owns a string of health clubs, including some in prestige hotels.
3. He is descended from Jamaican slave proprietors and sugar plantation owners, George Clarke and Edward Hyde.
George Clarke was also the Lieutenant Governor of New York Colony.
4. Coe is colour blind.
Colour Blindness - genetic inability to distinguish differences in hue
5. He was given the "Prince of Asturias" award (the very first one) in 1987.
The "Prince of Asturias" is an award given in Spain for high achievers around the world. There are several different categories and coe won the very first one in the category of "sport".
All in all Lord Sebastian Coe is an inspirational figure who has worked very hard to stay in his high profile position. He has been many things in his lifetime, including Olympic athlete, gold medal and world record holder.
He has had a spell as a tory MP for Falmouth and Camborne from 1992 until 1997.
He also became ambassador for the London 2012 Olympic bid in 2004. In this role he was wildly successful, helping to win the bid for London. From 2004 right up to and throughout the Olympics, Coe worked tirelessly and is rightly admired for his achievements in this area.
He has made many television appearances over the years. He's appeared as himself in "Brass Eye", "The Britta's Empire" and the spoof documentary "Twenty Twelve".
He has been adorned with a host of awards including, BBC sports personality of the year 1979, United Press International athlete of the year 1979 and 1981, Men's Track and Field athlete of the year 1979 and 1981.
It could be said that Lord Coe's future is bright; in fact "the world is his oyster". He has the scope to do anything he wishes to do. There will be huge queues for his services including international corporations, tv stations, radio stations, newspapers and magazines, political parties, charities and a plethora of other organisations. One big appointment he could be in for, surely he is now a prime candidate for London Mayor.

Every school year introduces a new set of parents to each teacher,  and because of the busy schedules of both groups, rapport is not easy.  Parent Teacher Associations offer some opportunity for bonding, but  there is little time for face-to-face conversation. The job at hand is  usually how to make money for a specific school need. Usually, that ends  up involving a small group of ardent parents working together. That is  great and serves a specific purpose well, but why not use the age-old  method of "competition" to draw a large, involved crowd, make money for a  project, and bond teachers, parents, and students in one  exciting, healthy activity?

There  are ways to create that activity, and I know from experience that it is  a winner. In fact, I once participated in such a game at my children's  elementary school. Here's how it works:

First of all, the  activity has to be chosen along with an action date. If it is at the  beginning of the school year, soft ball is a fantastic avenue for  creating a competition between the parents and the teachers and/or  administrators at an elementary school.

Ask for at least nine parent volunteers to compete with the teachers and administrative staff.

Set a price for admission at $1. Advertise the game with student  take-home notes. Choose students to collect admission. Bleachers would  be nice, but a seat on a blanket on the ground is fun and suitable for  elementary students and parents.

Create a volunteer cheer leading team for each side.
Then  it is time for action. The crowds will come, the money will accumulate  for a school project, and the relaxed fun-filled atmosphere will provide  numerous opportunities for parents and teachers to bond while getting  some healthy exercise. Such an activity helps children appreciate and  respect both teachers and parents.

This same technique works well,  using basketball, on the middle and high school level. As a high school  teacher, I participated in a basketball game of teachers versus  students, and the gym was packed. Like the elementary softball game,  there is little preparation but gigantic rewards.

The  old-fashioned basketball shootout works well for a high school too. It  can be the basketball team against the parents or the teachers or a  combination of both. Several rounds of "Horse" will bring laughter and  acceptance from the high school students. They enjoy our frailties and  gullibility in sports. Ironically, adults are more acceptable when our  weaknesses are uncovered.

Obviously, organized sports bring in the crowds, and that competition is great for students
and players but guarantees minimum bonding with teachers, and the money  usually goes back into that sport. To meet other school needs, parents  must get involved with teachers. The more the involvement, the more our  students thrive. There is no better way to attain these relationships  than through casual sports' activities. With little effort, there are  ways to draw a crowd, make money for a project, and bond teachers,  parents, and students while getting in some healthy exercise.
